Vintage 1960's dayak couple #28 (BS28)

Orang Ulu Couple
Borneo by local artist .
Twentieth Century

These commemorative heads were carved as representations of orang ulu tribal chiefs. These examples, being the earliest kind, are carved from Borneo classic iron hard wood; later examples are made out of light wood and are mostly crude in construction. The features are stunningly realistic and beautiful, the classic dayak tattooing can be seen on the male and the elaborate earrings and necklace signify high rank. The expressive nature of the face epitomizes the “chiefs” in tribal art. There is an old and stabilized age crack on top of the Male's head, otherwise in excellent condition.

Male stands 12 inches tall by 6.5 inches in width and weighs 6.8 pounds.
Female stands 12.6 inches tall and 6.75 inches wide ; weighs 7.05 pounds.
