This finely carved Kabiru<\/em> cotton beater originates from the island of Sumba<\/span><\/span>, where handwoven textiles hold deep ceremonial and social importance. The object is sculpted from a dense dark hardwood and features a highly stylized anthropomorphic figure with a rounded head, hollowed eyes, and an elongated geometric body. The restrained facial features and smooth weathered surface reflect the minimalist sculptural tradition associated with Sumbanese ritual art.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, Kabiru beaters were used in the preparation of cotton for weaving. Before spinning, raw cotton fibers were loosened and softened through rhythmic beating, an essential stage in the production of handwoven ikat<\/em> textiles for which Sumba is renowned.
