A striking Dayak Tunjung anthropomorphic charm figure<\/strong>, carved in wood and distinguished by its elongated body, strongly articulated limbs and expressive, somewhat enigmatic facial features. The figure is presented in a dynamic open-legged stance with the arms extended horizontally, giving the sculpture an unusual sense of movement and physical presence.<\/p>\n

The deliberately simplified anatomy and powerful linear proportions are characteristic of the spiritual and protective vocabulary of Dayak wood carving. Rather than seeking naturalistic representation, the carver has emphasized the essential human form, allowing the figure to function as a vessel or representation of spiritual power.<\/p>\n

Among the Tunjung and neighbouring Dayak peoples of East Kalimantan, small anthropomorphic wooden figures could serve as charms, protective figures and spiritual helpers. Such figures were associated with traditional ritual specialists and could be employed to provide protection from illness, malevolent forces and other forms of spiritual danger. Tunjung wooden figures are also documented as having been used as small talismans against disease.<\/p>\n

This example is particularly compelling for its raw, archaic character. The irregular hand-carved surfaces, asymmetry, exposed wood grain and restrained facial detailing retain the immediacy of the original carving process. Its raised arms and widely separated legs create a dramatic silhouette, while the pronounced head and simplified facial features give the figure an almost liminal presence between human and spirit.<\/p>\n
