Pustaha \u00a0is the magic book of the Batak people of north Sumatra. The book contains magical formulas, divinations, recipes, and laws. The pustaha is written and compiled by a Batak magician-priest datu.<\/p>\n
Physically the pustaha consists of two hardcovers \u00a0and pages made of softened tree bark for the writings. The hardcover is carved with motifs of an a gecko which represents the deity Boraspati ni Tano, a beneficial earth deity of the Toba Batak people. The pages are made of the bark of the alim<\/i> tree or the agarwood. The bark is softened in rice water, folded and secured between the two hardcovers. The book consist of 18 pages .<\/p>\n
