Description:
This expressive monkey mask originates from the Dayak Bidayuh people of Borneo and reflects the region’s rich tradition of ritual and performative carving. The mask is hand-carved from a single piece of light wood, giving it a relatively thin, lightweight structure suitable for wear. It features deeply hollowed eyes, a protruding muzzle, and exposed carved teeth, emphasizing an animated, animalistic expression associated with simian spirits.
The surface retains remnants of original white and dark brown pigments applied in asymmetrical, gestural patterns across the face and crown. These markings accentuate the eyes, nose, and cheeks, lending the mask a striking visual intensity. Carved ears appear in low relief on each side of the head, and the overall form shows deliberate simplification characteristic of Dayak sculptural traditions.
Surface wear, pigment loss, and a soft patina are visible throughout, consistent with age and use rather than decorative manufacture. Monkey imagery among Dayak groups is commonly linked to forest spirits, transformation, agility, and liminal states between the human and animal worlds.

Good condition for age; light surface wear, pigment abrasion, and minor age-related imperfections.
