A complete traditional Borneo hand-tap tattooing set, comprising a carved hardwood storage box with lid and a full complement of tattooing implements.
Executed in dense, dark brown hardwood – consistent with ironwood (ulin) – the exterior is adorned with incised Dayak style scrollwork and curvilinear motifs, characteristic of Borneo’s indigenous decorative vocabulary. Each short end of the box terminates in a carved zoomorphic figure; a stylized Aso dragon serving as handles. A separate flat carved lid panel features matching relief decoration.
The set contains four long-handled tattooing tools with slender dark hardwood shafts. Two tools feature elaborately carved bone finials of exceptional quality.
One topped with a seated ancestral figure (hampatong-style), rendered with crossed arms and the other topped with a naga (aso dragon) figure, dynamically posed with open jaws and flowing body. Both carved handles are accented with alternating black and natural bone ring inlays at the grip junction. The remaining two tools have plain tapered handles, and ahemispherical wooden bowl (for ink)
