Korwar Ancestor Figure – Raja Ampat, West Papua
Dimensions: H – 13 x 4 x 4 cm
With Stand: 18 cm / 153 g

This finely carved wooden Korwar ancestor figure originates from the Raja Ampat region of West Papua, Indonesia. The sculpture depicts a seated ancestral spirit with stylized facial features, bent arms, and a distinctive helmet-like head covering, a characteristic form found in traditional Korwar carvings of the Geelvink Bay and Raja Ampat cultural sphere.

Korwar figures were created by Papuan communities as sacred representations of deceased ancestors whose spirits were believed to remain active within the lives of their descendants. Rather than being simple portraits, these carvings served as spiritual vessels through which ancestral wisdom, protection, and blessings could be accessed. The compact size of this example suggests it may have been kept within a family dwelling or sacred space where offerings and prayers were performed.

Korwar figures played an important role in ritual life. They were consulted before important decisions such as voyages, fishing expeditions, warfare, marriages, and community ceremonies. Ancestors embodied within the figures were believed to offer guidance, protection, and success. Small offerings of food, betel nut, or tobacco were often presented to maintain harmony between the living and the spirit world.
