This unusual brass bell offers an intriguing perspective on the cultural exchange between external trading networks and indigenous spiritual traditions in Borneo. Historically, the Dayak peoples were not generally known for manufacturing bells of this type; such objects were more likely to have entered the region through trade during the 19th centuries. Once acquired, imported metal objects could be incorporated into local cultural practices and adapted to suit specific ceremonial requirements.
The present example is believed to have originated as a traded bell before being modified later for use by a Dayak shaman in ritual and healing practices. Its rounded, lotus-bud-like body is distinguished by pronounced petal-shaped motifs, incised outlines and carefully contoured reliefs. The textured surface and decorative treatment suggest deliberate secondary working, potentially intended to transform the bell’s appearance and adapt it to its new cultural context.
The contrast between its apparent trade-object origins and subsequent indigenous modification is particularly compelling. Rather than remaining solely a utilitarian object, the bell may have acquired additional spiritual significance through its association with traditional healing and ritual practice.
