This exquisite Pisau Raut, a traditional Borneo Dayak utility knife from the 1800s, originates from a private collection dating back to the early 1900s. The handle is crafted from a combination of durable hardwood, bone, and antler, while buffalo horn and antler rings are added strength and aesthetic contrast in the center of the handle. The blade is made of steel, showing a patina that reflects its age and use. A remarkable feature of this piece is the fine carving at the tip of the handle, depicting a guardian-like figure along with intricate representations of a Hudoq mask, a pair of Aso (dragon-like motif), and a hornbill. These elements are deeply symbolic in Dayak culture, signifying protection, spiritual connection, and the warrior’s spirit. The layered craftsmanship and material combination highlight the skill of its maker, making this Pisau Raut not only a functional tool but also a significant cultural artifact.
