Borneo Dayak Bidayuh Ceremonial Dance Mask
H – 28 x 27 x 9 cm | Weight – 518 g

This carved wooden ceremonial mask originates from the Bidayuh (Land Dayak) communities of Sarawak, Borneo. Compact yet visually commanding, the mask presents a stylized anthropomorphic face characterized by bold geometric planes and strong symmetry.

The elongated triangular nose projects prominently from the center, dividing sharply incised, almond-shaped eye apertures that slope downward in an intense expression. The mouth is tightly set, exposing a grid of individually carved teeth, lending the visage a stern, almost skeletal quality. Broad, flat lateral ear panels extend horizontally from each side, reinforcing its sculptural presence and balancing the composition.

The surface retains layered polychrome pigment in traditional earth tones—predominantly white, deep red, and black. The white ground is contrasted with darkened brow lines and cheek markings, while red bands articulate the forehead, jawline, and lateral facial planes. The paint shows natural wear, abrasion, and patination consistent with age and ritual handling, revealing the wood substrate beneath and enhancing its authenticity.

Hollowed from the reverse for wear, the interior displays hand-tool marks and a darkened patina from use. The eye slits are carefully pierced for visibility during performance. Such masks were traditionally worn during ceremonial dances associated with agricultural rites, communal festivals, or protective rituals, where they embodied ancestral or spirit beings.
