Dayak Mualang Mask

This is a traditional mask from the Mualang subgroup of the Dayak people in Borneo (Kalimantan). Hand-carved from a single piece of wood, the mask features a striking and rugged appearance, reflecting the bold and spiritual essence of Dayak artistry.

The mask has an elongated oval shape, with a pronounced forehead and a strong, angular nose that juts out sharply. Its eye holes are small and round, bordered by heavy carved ridges and faded pigments of white, black, and red, giving it a haunting and intense gaze. Around the eyes, faint traces of dark paint create a deep-set, shadowed look, enhancing its dramatic expression.

One of the most distinctive features is the wide, downturned mouth from which two large tusk-like projections extend downward, painted in an aged reddish hue. These tusks symbolize strength, ferocity, and the spiritual connection to nature and ancestral spirits. The large ear flaps on each side are roughly shaped but balanced, adding to the mask’s imposing presence.

The wood shows visible wear, cracks, and patina, suggesting considerable age and use, possibly in rituals, ceremonies, or dances. The simple yet powerful carving style, combined with the faded remnants of natural pigments, highlights the authenticity and cultural importance of the piece.
