This traditional Batak Santik is a ceremonial fire starter and protective amulet chain cast in brass, featuring a long linked chain with finely decorated terminals. One end holds an iron striker used for creating sparks, while the elaborately cast pendant section reflects the ornate metalworking traditions of the Batak peoples of North Sumatra. The scrolling motifs and symbolic forms are characteristic of Batak protective art, where everyday tools were often imbued with spiritual meaning.
Historically, fire starters such as these were practical objects carried during travel and daily life, used together with flint and tinder to produce fire before the widespread availability of matches. Among the Batak, however, they also served as personal charms believed to offer protection, status, and spiritual strength. Wealthier individuals and ritual specialists often owned finely decorated examples in brass or bronze, combining utility with ceremonial importance.
