Free DeliveryDayak Bidayuh Ritual Dance Mask –Â
This is a traditional ritual mask from the Dayak Bidayuh tribe of Borneo, meticulously hand-carved from a single piece of lightweight . The mask showcases a bold and expressive face, characterized by exaggerated circular eyes, a prominent nose, and a gaping open mouth with individually carved wooden teeth—giving it an animated, almost supernatural expression.
The surface is painted in natural earthy tones: ochre yellow, black, and deep red, applied in concentric and angular patterns that emphasize the mask’s exaggerated features. The eyes are especially striking, bulging and accentuated with swirling red pigment, possibly symbolizing heightened spiritual awareness or trance states during rituals. The mouth, agape with bared teeth, suggests a spirit in action warding off malevolent forces.
The reverse of the mask reveals rough chisel marks, indicating it was hand-carved using traditional tools. Two eye slits are visible for the wearer, allowing limited vision during ceremonial dances or spirit-invoking rituals. A short projection at the top may have served as a securing point for a headdress or hair-like fiber attachments.
Such masks are traditionally used in ritual performances, harvest celebrations, or spirit-invoking ceremonies, often representing ancestor spirits or supernatural beings that protect the community. The aggressive expression and vivid coloration aim to command spiritual presence and captivate both participant and observer during ritual acts.
