Free DeliveryPapua Koteka – Ceremonial/Everyday Male Gourd Cover
A traditional koteka (also known as a penis gourd) from the central highlands of Papua, Indonesia / Papua New Guinea cultural region. This example is fashioned from a dried bottle gourd, naturally elongated and curved, with a warm ochre-tan surface showing age patina, minor abrasions, and darkened areas from handling and use.
The form is long and gently tapering, with a pronounced upward curve toward the distal tip, a shape associated with particular highland groups where style, length, and curvature could signify regional identity, social status, or personal preference. The base opening is cleanly cut and hollowed, revealing the thin yet sturdy gourd wall. Surface wear and small blemishes are consistent with organic material that has been dried, shaped, and used.
Koteka were traditionally worn by adult men, secured to the body with fiber cords or waistbands. Beyond modesty, they functioned as markers of cultural identity, age, and sometimes ceremonial role. Variations in size and angle could indicate whether the piece was intended for daily wear, dance, or ritual display.
