This finely carved hardwood ceremonial pestle originates from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, an area renowned for its rich artistic traditions and complex spiritual beliefs. The upper section is surmounted by a stylized anthropomorphic figure featuring an elongated zoomorphic head, combining human and animal characteristics commonly associated with ancestral and spirit beings in Sepik cosmology.

Below, the shaft is adorned with deeply incised patterns and flanked by two opposing aquatic creatures, possibly fish or crocodiles, symbols closely linked to the riverine environment and creation myths of the Sepik peoples. The rounded lower end suggests that the object may have functioned as a ceremonial pestle rather than a free-standing sculpture.
