Description

This refined Dayak Bidayuh court dance mask represents a highly stylized human visage carved in elongated oval form. The mask features deeply recessed almond-shaped eye apertures, a pronounced triangular nose, and a narrow mouth with inset carved teeth and red pigment, conveying both authority and restrained expression. The surface retains visible adze marks, evidencing hand-tool craftsmanship typical of Bidayuh village ateliers.

A black painted headband encircles the forehead, surmounted by a raised polygonal crown element, signifying elevated status within ceremonial contexts. The elongated chin terminates in a downward projecting finial, painted black and decorated with a spiral motif, a visual symbol often associated with continuity, ancestral protection, and spiritual balance.

Natural earth pigments in ochre, black, and deep red were traditionally derived from clay, soot, and plant resins. The restrained palette reinforces the mask’s formal and dignified character, distinguishing it from more aggressive warrior or healing masks.

Cultural Function
