Antique Dayak Bidayah Shamanic Mask

This is an exceptionally old and delicate Dayak Bidayuh shamanic mask collected from a long house near the boarders of Sarawak and Kalimantan, crafted from an extremely light type of wood, possibly from a species native to the rainforests of Borneo. The mask has a strikingly weathered appearance, bearing the marks of time, with a cracked and pitted surface that suggests extensive use in ritualistic practices. The faded pigments, with remnants of black and green around the eye area, hint at its original painted details. The hollowed-out eyes and slightly open mouth give it an enigmatic and somewhat eerie expression, indicative of its ceremonial purpose—likely used in spiritual healing, ancestor veneration, or protective rites.

The aged patina and natural wear on the mask suggest significant exposure to the elements, possibly from being stored in a sacred location or passed down through generations.
