Origin: East Kalimantan, Borneo
Tribe: Dayak Modang
Material: Light Wood (possibly kayu terap or similar soft tropical hardwood)
Period: Early to mid-20th century
These finely carved ceremonial earrings originate from the Modang subgroup of the Dayak peoples of East Borneo. Traditionally reserved for high-ranking individuals such as village chiefs or prominent elders, these pieces were used specifically during periods of mourning as substitutes for the customary and highly valued hornbill ivory earrings, which were considered too sacred or heavy for bereavement rituals.
Each earring is shaped with a stylized scroll at the top—a motif often associated with the spiritual spiral of life and continuity. The front surfaces are intricately carved with anthropomorphic or spirit-like figures with large eyes and spread limbs, suggesting protective or ancestral imagery. The simplified design and choice of lightweight wood made them both symbolic and practical for temporary ceremonial use.
The side carvings show additional symbolic motifs, possibly reflecting tribal identity or cosmic beliefs, while the backs are left plain, showing wear and patina indicative of age and use. Mounted on custom stands for preservation and display, these earrings offer a rare glimpse into the nuanced customs of Modang Dayak mourning rites, where status, symbolism, and material were deeply interwoven.
