Free DeliveryA fishing charm ‘Suk’ from Melanau tribe of Sarawak. Melanau are one of the smallest group in Sarawak with a population of less the 60.000 with prominent figure within the tribe. Such charms are use for fishing and believe to bring good luck and fortune to those who possess it. In the olden days such charm are kept as personal charms and are kept in secret and not shown to others. However with the changing culture and new generation such tradition has evolve. Melanau charms are very rare and not many exist as there are very few that were made. This piece was collected in the 80s and were probably from the early to mid 1900s. Collected from Sibu town in Sarawak. The figure represents a spirit with mesmerizing face wearing a jacket that features a mask and a snake circling its head on top and its hands laying gently on its knee. Material deer antler.
