A striking Dayak Tunjung anthropomorphic charm figure, carved from a single piece of wood and distinguished by its unusually elongated, dynamic human form. The figure stands with one leg firmly grounded while the other is raised, creating a sense of movement rarely encountered in the more static forms of traditional Dayak protective sculpture. Its simplified oval head, deeply incised facial features and extended arms give the carving a powerful yet restrained presence.

The naturally weathered surface retains a rich, dark brown patina, with visible tool marks, age-related abrasions and areas of surface wear that speak to its history of handling and use. The deliberately reduced anatomy and expressive posture are characteristic of the highly individualised small-scale ritual carvings associated with the Tunjung and neighbouring Benuaq traditions of East Kalimantan.

Small anthropomorphic carvings of this type are generally understood within the Tunjung tradition as protective or ritual charms, associated with the indigenous system of spiritual healing, divination and shamanic practice. Historical documentation records small wooden figures known as jurong, which could form part of a shaman’s collection of spiritual helpers and protective objects. They were used in connection with ritual protection, healing and the safeguarding of individuals against illness or malevolent spiritual forces.

The figure’s unusual raised-leg posture adds particular character to the piece. Rather than functioning simply as a representation of a human being, such ritual figures were invested with apotropaic power, serving as a spiritual intermediary or guardian within the ritual environment.
