Free DeliveryOld Borneo Dayak Iban Ceremonial Sculpture – Carved from Belian (Ironwood)
This rare and unusual ceremonial sculpture originates from the Dayak Iban people of Borneo and is meticulously hand-carved from belian (Bornean ironwood), one of the hardest and most revered timbers in the region. Known for its durability and spiritual significance, belian is traditionally used for important ritual and architectural purposes among the Dayak tribes.
The sculpture depicts a dynamic composition of human figures entwined in a vertical totemic form. A prominent central figure is enclosed within a leaf-like or shield-like frame, seated in a composed, almost meditative posture. Below and around this central figure, additional smaller figures are carved in seated or crouched positions, their placement and gestures suggesting layered symbolic meanings — possibly ancestral spirits, guardians, or representations of mythical beings.
Swirling motifs carved near the base reflect typical Iban aesthetics, symbolizing the flow of spiritual energy or life force. The overall design speaks to themes of protection, fertility, and communion with the spirit world, consistent with the Dayak cosmology that deeply integrates the natural and supernatural realms.
The sculpture’s base suggests it may have been mounted onto a larger ritual object or ceremonial post, possibly used in community rites or ancestral veneration ceremonies. The surface bears signs of age and ritual handling, giving it a rich patina and historical character.
