This carved wooden ceremonial mask originates from the Bidayuh (Land Dayak) communities of Sarawak, Borneo. The mask presents a powerful, stylised human visage characterised by bold geometric modelling and restrained yet expressive pigmentation.

The face is carved with pronounced brow ridges forming a continuous dark band across the forehead, creating an intense, contemplative gaze. Almond-shaped eye apertures are deeply cut and framed by reddish-brown pigment, enhancing the dramatic expression during performance. The nose is strongly projected and angular, while the mouth is rendered in a distinctive diamond-shaped form set within a sharply defined lower facial plane.

The mask retains a traditional palette of white lime or kaolin-based ground, overlaid with black and earthy red pigments. The surface exhibits visible tool marks, age patina, and areas of pigment wear consistent with ritual handling and use. The lateral ear projections are broad and simplified, reinforcing the mask’s sculptural symmetry and ceremonial presence.

The reverse is hollowed by hand, showing adze and carving marks, with pierced eye openings and attachment points for fibre or rattan bindings used to secure the mask during dance.

Such masks were traditionally employed in communal ceremonies, agricultural rites, and ritual performances intended to invoke protective spirits, ancestral forces, or symbolic characters within Bidayuh cosmology. The stylisation balances abstraction and anthropomorphism, reflecting the aesthetic vocabulary of interior Sarawak Dayak carving traditions.
